讲座题目一:To inspect, or not to inspect process compliance, that’s the question:A case of hand hygiene in healthcare

摘要:

Hand hygiene compliance for health care workers (HCWs) is one of the most important issues in hospitals as it has a significant impact on patient safety and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Recent years have witnessed the pervasive HAIs caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). ARB is transmitted among patients by transiently contaminated hands of HCWs during routine care activities. One main driver for the high level of ARB transmission is the inconsistent but strategic behaviour of HCWs when they are required to wash their hands. We formulate HCWs' strategic behaviour as an evolutionary game, integrated with infection transmission dynamics. Our mathematical model suggests several motivations behind HCWs' hand-washing compliance, including bandwagoning, free-riding, and prosocial. Based on these motivations, interventions are identified to enhance the compliance rate. Using inspection (monitoring) as an example, which is a commonly used intervention, the optimal condition that inspection is an effective intervention is derived. Its managerial insights will also be discussed.

 

讲座题目二:Optimal timing of clean technology adoption under uncertainty:A case of cellulosic biofuels in Iowa

摘要:

The revised Renewable Fuel Standard of the U.S. mandates a production of 16 billion gallons per year by 2022 from cellulosic biofuels. Iowa, rich in agricultural residues like corn stover, is a major player in contributing to the fulfillment of the cellulosic biofuels mandate. When is a good time for Iowa to start investing in cellulosic biofuels? Using a fast pyrolysis facility as an example, we present a real options approach for valuing the investment of a new technology for producing cellulosic biofuels subject to construction lead times, uncertain fuel price, and supply uncertainty. The optimal timing for Iowa to start constructing the fast pyrolysis facility is analyzed in a case study. This talk will also cover how policy uncertainties may affect the induction of clean technology.

 

主讲人简介:

Chung-Li Tseng博士毕业于加州大学伯克利分校并取得工业工程和运筹学博士学位。Dr. Tseng先后在美国马里兰大学和美国密苏里大学罗拉分校任教,目前是澳大利亚新南威尔士大学商学院副教授。他的主要研究领域包括:运营管理,金融工程,项目管理,风险管理,医疗管理等。其研究成果发表在《Operations Research》、《European Journal of Operational Research》、《International Journal of Production Economics》、《The Energy Journal》、《Energy Economics》、《Construction Management and Economics》等多种SCI检索期刊。

Dr. Tseng目前是电机与电子学工程师联合会(IEEE)高级会员,运筹学和管理学研究协会(INFORMS)、美国土木工程师协会(ASCE)成员,曾任INFORMS能源、自然资源以及环境部董事。同时他也是《ASCE Journal of Energy Engineering》期刊主编(影响因子1.895),担任《ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems》,《International Journal of Electronic Business Management》、《International Journal of Business Analytics》等多个国际学术期刊编委,并担任《Operations Research》、《Management Science》、《European Journal of Operational Research》等40多个国际学术期刊的审稿人。
